Travel

Simply put, you can’t have the same travel experience if you don’t speak the native language. While English is now known as the universal language, there are still billions of people who don’t speak it. Spanish is spoken four (or five) continents and is the native language in twenty one countries. Knowing Spanish will allow you to better and more safely immerse yourself in the culture of your Spanish-speaking travel destination!

Going beyond just being able to order something in a restaurant and being understood, improving your Spanish will allow you to make lifelong friends and become an active participant as opposed to simply a passive observer.

Know Your Neighbors

In Europe, Spanish is second only to English in popularity. Worldwide, counting only native speakers, Spanish outranks even English. And with over 400 million speakers, after English, Spanish is only outranked by Mandarin and Hindi, languages spoken officially only in China and India.

In the US, the Hispanic population, as of 2015, is 55 million, roughly 17% of the population and the largest ethnic minority. By 2060, estimates have the Hispanic population growing to 119 million, or 28.6% of the population! If your goal is to be able to speak, and practice, a second language, Spanish would be a very smart move.

Business/Employment

Looking to market a product worldwide? Might be nice to be able to offer it to the 400 million+ speakers whose mother tongue is Spanish. Or to the fastest growing consumer demographic in the US? Roughly 17% of the population speak Spanish; by 2060, that number is estimated to grow to 29%! Want to be able to better communicate with employees, co-workers, and customers? Speaking Spanish will only increase your ability to get employed and to get your message heard.

Health

Learning anything is good for your mental health. Learning a new language, and using it, is like steroids for the brain.
Improve problem solving abilities and multitasking skills, improving your memory, shown by bilingual students scoring better on standardized tests.
Help prevent (or delay by at least 4 years) neurological disorders like Alzheimers and dementia.
Become more perceptive of your environment.
Improve your decision-making skills.
And even speak English (and other languages) better!

Expand Your Mind

“He who knows no foreign language, knows nothing of his own.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“The limits of my language are the limits of my universe.” Ludwig Wittgenstein

Not counting all the physical health benefits, learning a new language will expand your mind and expand your universe. By allowing you to communicate in your own language better as well as add over 400 million new potential chatting partners to your plate! With the Internet, with like italki.com and interpals.net, and with the growing population of Spanish-speakers worldwide, finding and maintaining friends in new languages is easier than ever.

So learn the language, imbibe the culture, and get inspired to share your experience!

Fun and Easy

Last but not least, if you still aren’t convinced, it may be because you are worried you don’t “have what it takes” to learn Spanish. That’s complete gobbledy-gook. Spanish has many words in common with English, is much much easier to learn to pronounce and spell properly, and has an incredible amount of resources that will make the learning process easy and entertaining!

Watching a movie, listening to new music, traveling to Colombia for an arepa con queso, learning Spanish doesn’t have to be boring. With weekend activities like trips to coffee farms and hikes to waterfalls, homestays with local families, dance lessons, volunteer opportunities, and more, studying Spanish in Jardin with ACA will provide you with an experience to remember.
